The Responsibility of Parenting

By: David Rader II on October 02, 2010 @ 11:26 PM

A meditation on what the responsibility of parenting is in our society:

"Parenting is not a huge responsibility just from the things you should do, but perhaps even more importantly; the things you aught to do."

I hope I will heed my own conclusion better.

The difference between "should" and "aught" is lost on me.

To your way of thinking, how do they differ?

Michael,

Like how all squares are rectangles, but not all rectangles are squares; What we ought to do is always what we should do, but what we should do is not always what we ought.

Ought has the notion of being "morally based" in its common use as well standard definition. What we think we "should" do can arise from fear, habit, morals and a number of other things. That's not to say sometimes these same things can't help come to a moral conclusion.
