Google Chat Formatting Commands

By: David Rader II on September 29, 2007 @ 6:17 AM

Tired of chatting in Google chat with plain text? Would you like to know a few little rarely known formatting command tips? Here they are!

Putting a star at the beginning and end of a word or phrase makes it bold
*bold* *this is bold*

The stars will disappear when the word goes bold.

Putting an underscore _ at the beginning and end of a word of phrase will make it italicized.
_italics_ _this is italicized_

The underscores will disappear when the word goes italics.

These smiley faces are animated...
:) :-)

:'( crying face

:( :-( sad faces

The last one I know is how to skip lines (line breaks)... To do this you will need to type something on the first line, then while hold SHIFT and press ENTER
Example result:
Hey there

guess what

i skipped lines! I made things *bold* too

and even _italics!_ what do you think?

Feel free to link directly to this page if you found it useful. Thanks!

-strikethough- putting a minus on each side of a sentence or word will make it strike though!
